Breakfast in China

October 7, 2014

Breakfast most days was a mix of tea, soy drink, leftovers from night before, and rice porridge. It was pretty good, but after a while Novia Liu wanted something different. From about day one of our relationship she’s been raving about Beitzuh which is a breakfast burrito type dish you can only get in her part of the world. Her parents had reservations about us going out in in public because there aren’t really any non-Chinese visitors to Baotou and they were afraid i’d get robbed. Anyway, a couple times we got up and went downstairs to visit the food vendors before her mom could get breakfast ready. Beitzhuh with meat egg, pickled cabbage, and some crunchy soy product, breakfast crepe and soy milk drink were about $1.50 for everything.

Gritos and Calesthenics

September 18, 2014

Day 2 started around 4:30 am with jetlagged, but wide awake. The bed we slept on was the firmest bed I’ve ever slept on. Maybe 1/8 inch of sag which Liu Shuang’s mom says is good for your back. I went out for a walk with Silvia’s dad to get to know the neighborhood. Her parents live in a newer apartment building on a street with a couple dozen apartment buildings. At 6:30am on a Sunday, there were lots of people walking and at 7 they kicked off group exercise classes with music and an instructor counting out reps. Very cool. Later we ate Chinese food and then more Chinese food. I honestly can’t remember what we ate, but if I had to guess I’d say it involved some type of noodle in broth and pickled cabbage.

China- Airplane Delays

September 18, 2014

Everything at LAX went smoothly, originally are seats were behind one another, but Novia Liu managed to charm a guy into switching his aisle seat next to her for my middle seat. Downgrade for him, upgrade for me. Layover in Incheon was nice. Airport is super clean, food was tasty and reasonably priced. International airport in Beijing was also pretty nice. Beijing traffic was just as crazy as advertised. It’s not so much that people don’t obey traffic signals. People mostly stop on red, it’s just that whatever happens between red lights is pretty much up to you. In a lot of places you’re sharing the road with bikes, scooters, and these 3 wheel trucks that seem to be everywhere in China. On the trip from airport to airport in Beijing I don’t think we ever got moving faster than 60-70 kmh. I noticed that there are long body Audi and BMW’s everywhere, but they’re all 6 cylinders. Makes sense really, since you wouldn’t be able to go any faster if you had the bigger engine. Silvia’s cousin works for a domestic airline and had warned us that are flight was only ontime 47% of the time. Naturally are flight was delayed about 3 hours and the local Beijing Airport was not that entertaining. Oh well. Silvia’s parents picked us up at the airport in Baotou in a Buick station wagon. (It’s tiny, but capable.) Silvia was literally dancing around the house within the 1st hour of us being Baotou. She also did her happy walk which involves puffing out her chest and strutting around like I imagine the monopoly man would. Kinda cute

Under Armour

Ridiculous that somebody would tell any 13yr old, but especially Misty Copeland that they couldn’t be an athelete or a dancer based on their body. Who knew that when she grew up women would spend years of their lives and tons of money on supplements, trainers, and boobs to try and look like Misty Copeland.

Straight Six Mafia

Straight Six Mafia

After 45 years the factory battery tray and tie down had just about rusted away. Not as exciting as go fast parts but just as important. Id been using zip ties to hold the battery in place because a couple months ago it actually came loose and was hanging by the cables. My dad has taken a shining to the truck and were probably going to trade rides. The truck for his African dictator Mercedes sedan. It was an older widows car and garaged its whole life. It’s worth it for the smell alone. The leather in older benzes is magical.

Mima turns 100

June 16, 2014

Spent the last 3 days on Long Island with my grandma and dad’s side of the family. My grandma turned 100 yesterday and told us not to worry because she had an aunt who lived to be 103. 103 50 years ago is like 130 in 2014 years. Crazy. She’s fallen a couple times this past year which is always scary, but she was able to walk around a bit with her walker and shes’ still sharp. I wish more of the cousins my age would have made the trip because there are so many of us, but all in all it was a good weekend.

E39 M5 Dinan S2?

E39 M5 Dinan S2?

Cl ad is really poorly written, but it seems like this guy is selling a Stage 2 Dinan M5 for $15k. Doing the math, that’s a $70k base price plus like $35k for the Dinan upgrades so you’re getting a $90,000 dollar discount right? Probably not cuz the stock engine has 196,000 miles on it. Still if you budget 10k for an engine rebuild it could be a pretty awesome car.
