Ladies of the UK

November 27, 2010

Been listening to a lot of pop music from across the pond lately. Emotional, exuberant, kinda powerful, lots of fun. I’m a closet Boy George fan so I was really excited to hear him on this new Mark Ronson track. Mark Ronson>Samantha Ronson all day, everyday. Better music and he has dated hotter women.

Don’t Be Evil

November 25, 2010

I had an epiphany today. I admit it might be a product of engineering hubris and the series of articles Rolling Stone(written by Matt Taibbi, this guy is a genius) ran on the Lehman Brothers Collapse and more recently how the banks the Fed bailed out have falsified thousands of documents in order to use the court system to evict home owners from properties they want to foreclose on.

The Lehman Brothers article was especially mind blowing because it proved that the Lehman brothers collapse was the result of a coordinated effort by one or possibly several major banks that took advantage of disparities created by electronic trading systems to flatline Lehman Brothers stock.

Anyway, the ephiphany I had is that a large portion of accountants, lawyers, and investment bankers only have jobs because we’re afraid of the fraud that will be perpetrated by lawyers, accountants, and bankers. Some of them really do contribute to society, but a lot of them basically get rich by exploiting loopholes they created or trying to stop people from lying/cheating/decieving/exploring the depths of corporate depravity and their own personal greed. You guys don’t produce shit. Don’t be evil.

Brother and a couple friends made the trip down to OC to celebrate. It was probably the best birthday i’ve had in 4 or 5 years. It was good just being around friends and family instead being alone in a hotel room or secluded on the East Coast like I was the last couple of years. My roommate got me a donut maker! Once that happened I knew was in good hands

Beast Mode

Sometimes I wish I wrassled when I was younger, just so it’d be easier to pick people up and put them on their head. Japan seems to be a big fan of dynasty’s. I like the Yamamoto dynasty…Dad was an olympic wrestler, Seiko & Miyu are world champs, and Kid is probably the hardest hitting 5’4″ man this side of Pac-man. Seiko is cute in the face for being such a beast. I like how she smiles as she’s pinning people.

Yushin Okami>everyone except Anderson Silva @ 185lb. Sherdog polled a bunch of proffessional fighters and 40 picked Marquardt to win vs only 4 for Okami. I think a lot of people are still operating under the misconception that Okami isn’t one of the strongest mw’s in the world. A couple years ago when Okami was recouping from his injury he dedicated himself to bulking up. Everyone likes to talk about who cuts how much weight and how big guys are, but Okami posted a picture of himself at 100kg’s and you could still see his abs. Sonnen was able to take down Okami because he’s got great wrestling technique, but no one at 185 is doing to just drag down Okami from the clinch.

Went to Downey for “The Real JDM Meet“. They’re saying 150+ cars, but i’m pretty sure it was 100 tops unless you’re counting bone-stock cars. So maybe a lil hype on Bulletproof’s part, but i’m not mad cuz they had a ton of nice S2000 and 350z’s. U really don’t have to do much with a 350Z to make it look good. Nismo or someone elses front lip and sideskirts. 19” Rims, drop it…done. It was great seeing a lot of well done cars and baller 3pc wheels, but it also made me miss having a good car.

Henry Rollins on weightlifting…

“Muscle mass does not always equal strength. Strength is kindness and sensitivity. Strength is understanding that your power is both physical and emotional. That it comes from the body and the mind. And the heart.

Yukio Mishima said that he could not entertain the idea of romance if he was not strong. Romance is such a strong and overwhelming passion, a weakened body cannot sustain it for long. I have some of my most romantic thoughts when I am with the Iron. Once I was in love with a woman. I thought about her the most when the pain from a workout was racing through my body.

Everything in me wanted her. So much so that sex was only a fraction of my total desire. It was the single most intense love I have ever felt, but she lived far away and I didn’t see her very often. Working out was a healthy way of dealing with the loneliness. To this day, when I work out I usually listen to ballads.

I prefer to work out alone. It enables me to concentrate on the lessons that the Iron has for me. Learning about what you’re made of is always time well spent, and I have found no better teacher. The Iron had taught me how to live. Life is capable of driving you out of your mind. The way it all comes down these days, it’s some kind of miracle if you’re not insane. People have become separated from their bodies. They are no longer whole.

I see them move from their offices to their cars and on to their suburban homes. They stress out constantly, they lose sleep, they eat badly. And they behave badly. Their egos run wild; they become motivated by that which will eventually give them a massive stroke. They need the Iron Mind.

Through the years, I have combined meditation, action, and the Iron into a single strength. I believe that when the body is strong, the mind thinks strong thoughts. Time spent away from the Iron makes my mind degenerate. I wallow in a thick depression. My body shuts down my mind.

The Iron is the best antidepressant I have ever found. There is no better way to fight weakness than with strength. Once the mind and body have been awakened to their true potential, it’s impossible to turn back.

The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you’re a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds.”

Yukio Mishima wrote Sound of Waves. It’s a gentle book about youthful love and unusually optimistic for a book written by a Japanese nationalist after the second world war. I’m pretty sure that the protagonist in Sound of Waves(Shinji) served as the inspiration for the hero in Naruto that saves his village by swimming against the tide in a river. Shinji is to Japanese Fisherman what Andrew Carnegie is to railway workers, but without the good luck that Carnegie had in the stock market. Shinji isn’t particularly smart, but he works hard and is stronger than the other boys in his village, and it’s those qualities that ultimately enable him to convince his rich g/f’s father that he’s worthy of marrying her. It’s probably not a coincidence, that for the last 15yrs of his life Mishima religiously worked out 3x a week.

Stuff I learned this week

Guys can wear ballet flats. I’ve seen it.

Conflict Cobalt. Lithium ion batteries are in a host of electronic devices(MP3’s laptops, cell phones, digital cameras, etc) To make Li batteries you need Cobalt. The bulk of our Cobalt comes from Central African countries. Naturally the mines have poor working conditions, nonexistent environmental regs, child labor, and the money goes to support whatever regime is controlling the mines. Most companies including the fruit company everyone loves, Nokia, Sony, and Nintendo don’t include the extraction of mineral material as part of their supply chain management and either through choice or ignorance don’t acknowledge that they’re buying cobalt from these Central African Mines.

The Swedish woman I met last week… Funny, smart, slight accent, huge bonus points for speaking Spanish with a cute accent, and she used to sing in a punk band. Definitely wifey material.

Lotus BJJ in Irvine. Nice people, just like the Robot BJJ affiliate in Santa Monica, but with a lot more mat space and a couple professional fighters.

Don’t wait…for anything.
