Sunburn

March 31, 2010

Before we even got to the beach my mom said I looked pale and needed to get darker. If you’ve seen pictures of my mom, you know how awesome this is…I put sunscreen on anyway, but not on my legs since they’re usually pretty dark from soccer. Except I haven’t played soccer in about a year now, and I don’t walk around in daisy duke soccer shorts… so I got burnt on my legs for the first time in the last 15 years or so.

Oh my… thoughts I… return to summertime

March 24, 2010

I can make the cut to 169.9lbs for Nationals in June. I just need to lay off candy. Inspired by a friend quitting his nicotine habit, starting April 1st… no candy! At least until after weigh-ins for nationals. If you’re a jellybean enthusiast, you owe it to yourself to try the Sweet Tart brand jellybeans. I ate a bag this week. Jolly Rancher jellybeans are also pretty good.

Super Korean Denis Kang. I dunno if he’s been the same since his g/f committed suicide, but I hope he wins a couple big fights before he retirs.

A million blessings

Grapplers Quest Sucks

March 21, 2010

I had read bad reviews about Grapplers Quest online. Basically how the events don’t run on schedule…That being said I got to the tournament around 5:30pm for what was supposed to be a 6:30 start. They said they were running 1-1.5hrs late. No problem, I like grappling, I’ll just watch some of the other matches… 8:30 comes and it looks like we’re coming up. Change, warm-up, etc. 10:30pm, they still haven’t called my division. 11:00pm, they call my division for “immediate check-in”. Check-in and they say it’ll probably be another 1/2hr before my division starts. Alternatively, they offer refunds. I get in line for a refund, and finally end up leaving around 11:30pm. My division still hadn’t been called when I left. Then I hit traffic on the George Washington Bridge so it took almost 2 hrs to get home. Grapplers Quest sucks.

These pants suffocate my Hardy Boys

March 17, 2010

Congrats on the house and getting married Jeff. Definitely living the dream, and not even 25. I talked with a classmate who’s a little older yesterday and he told that he and his wife had planned to start having kids a couple years ago, but they didn’t because of uncertainty with work and the stock market. Now he has to wait until he’s done with school. In the meantime Jazzy Jeff is rolling his Crown Vic around town and working towards early retirement.
In other news, I met Dan Hardy last week. I’d say he’s pretty much the same size as me, except in really good shape. He was walking around at around 190lbs, but he has to make 170lbs for the fight. I can’t imagine weighing 180lbs in a couple weeks, let alone 170lbs. People don’t talk about him being a big welterweight, but the cut has to be pretty painful for him.

I saw a gathering of 1,500 Native Americans

March 14, 2010

I crossed over the 50 applications milestone last week. So far i’ve gotten 6 interviews, 3 denials, 1 offer, and 2 pending/maybes. I guess I’ve actually gotten close to 50 rejections, but i’m trying to focus on the positive in 2010. Nothing from CA or Florida, but most of the places I applied to were in NY so I’m sending out another dozen or so applications to CA and Fl. I also applied to a couple of the tribal courts in Arizona and New Mexico because the summer’s are similar to Fresno(hot and dry), and I think it’d be a different experience to work in a tribal court.

These mother fuckers are not dead…I saw a gathering of 1,500 Native Americans…the place was called Wal-Mart in New Mexico.

I remember waiting

I had an interview in Queens yesterday for a summer internship with a judge. Really friendly interviewer…westernmost part of Long Island is starting to grown on me..hope I get it.

Over and Out

You can be a certified genius and work yourself to the bone as an engineer and still have to wait 15-20 years to see the money that a new associate or investment banker would see at 25. It’s not all about the money, but at some point you realize that the U.S. doesn’t value engineers the way it used too. At the same time, I don’t want to point any fingers, but I’ve met some engineers from mediocre programs who I wouldn’t trust designing a paper weight. Why would you do your design work domestically when you can hire guys with better fundamentals and stronger work ethics in China or India for 1/10 the price?
The job prospects for engineers are still good because less young people want to be engineers, but I think the profession is in trouble. If you’ve got good English and your good at math you can be just about anything. Why pigeon hole yourself just because you’re good with numbers? For people my uncle’s age, engineering had a certain prestige, but now people just think of an engineering degree as being a lot of hard work. Aerospace was new and exciting 40 years ago, but aerospace has lost its luster lately. I have a friends working on the space shuttle and guided missile systems and they hate it. Hopefully bio-med and alternative energy pick up so the profession has something sexy and exciting to entice potential engineers.

My relationship with Sakuraba has been complicated lately. On one hand he’s a legend and I love his craftiness and improbable comebacks, but he’s too old to be taking beatings like this. I knew how the fight ended in advance, and I still got teary eyed.

Just plain wrong

I bet you could get this license plate past most non-Japanese people. I wonder if everyone in Japan knows about it, or only the type of guys who buy underwear out of vending machines. My excuse is I learned from a Japanese guy who actually lives in Japan now. What’s yours?

Wow, just Wow

Miku Supenova announced her retirement at the DEEP event over the weekend. Apparently she’s depressed and may be having man trouble. It’d be some condolence if she’s getting married or pregant, but I was really hoping she’d move up in weight and take over the world.
