Cheap Labor

March 28, 2009

From time to time my dad has sage advice on labor relations. Tonight’s kernel was something like “este ni habla espanol, no se puede meter con ese tipo”. Basically if your brown and you no longer speak Spanish you’re probably going to overcharge for manual labor and not be as hardworking. As one of the older immigrant groups, it troubles me that so many latino’s have lost the language and the work ethic.

I try not to judge cuz it’s usually not your fault if you don’t speak your parents or grandparents native language, but if you can’t pronounce your name correctly you might as well give up. I’m not talking about simplifying your name so everyone can say it, or anglicizing your name when you introduce yourself at work, that’s being considerate of the fact that people may not have experience with pronouncing non-white names. I draw the line at pronouncing your family name.  If your from country x and you meet someone else from country x and still don’t pronounce your family correctly it’s pretty much a done deal. Retire and plan on having to tell your kids they have to check the “white” box on all official documents.

Big body sedans are gangsta. Both these cars are for sale in socal for 15k! They would have looked better in black, and even then i’d probably have to buy designer jeans and a blackberry to look legit in either of these cars. A late model Q45 or GS300 are definitely on my list of cars to own.

Science of Happiness

March 23, 2009

I’ve always thought that their are people who are naturally predisposed to being happy. Not that they necessarily have any particular reason to be happy, but their default emotional setting is one of hapiness and general satisfaction with life. I was reading an article in Business Week today and it turns out I was right!  A Harvard Prof said that although “happiness” is at best an ambiguous definition of an emotional state, there is a gene carried by a minority of the population  that is tied to “happiness”. People with the gene are more at ease with life and are generally “happy”.  Having been both intensly happy and unhappy in recent years, I can appreciate people who are naturally positive

Armbars and Handshakes

March 18, 2009

I think there should be a protocol for social interaction’s outside of jiu jitsu. If  you let someone armbar you 100x(literally 100x) a handshake or at least a nod should be the standard.

Friday a 12yr old girl told me to grow a pair. Saturday the same girl called and told me grow a pair. Today my brother told me to man up and front money for a business. Still a good weekend.

Common sense

The most important promises are the ones you make to yourself. Of those promises, the ones you’re too afraid to tell anyone are probably the most important.

New Yeah Yeah Yeah’s album next month. The trailer for the new single has the perpetual motion one arm cat! I went a whole year with a one arm cat during my first year of UCLA when I lived with a proud fob and closet ladies man from Shanghai. I’d wake up in the middle of the night and I’d hear the cat clicking, look over and see Jai and his lady friend programming or watching subtitled friends episodes and go back to sleep.

I’ve always been impressed with Karen O’s posture. It’s messed up, but she’s tall and a lil different looking and tall strange looking girls have the least incentive to stand up straight…Even in the Maps video when she’s about to cry she has really good posture.  I’d be curious to know if she did dance or some kind of performing art as a kid and they drilled good posture into her. On another note, they stole the break from Maps and used it in Kelly Clarkson’s SUBG. I admit I didn’t realize that, Rolling Stone told me.

I got good news in the mail today.   I usually don’t believe in karma, but maybe,  just maybe I did something right and this is how it’s coming back to me.  I told my roomate, I told my family, and then I told my ex’s family cuz they happened to call.  I dont’ talk with my ex, but I talk to her family on a pretty regular basis… I was tempted to mass text everyone I knew for an improptu boba run, but instead I went to the sushi place near work.  I like it cuz it’s always empty and it’s next to a yogurtland knockoff that’s pretty much always empty too.  Then I drove aimlessly and practiced downshifting.
